I rented a Toyota 4 Runner on Memorial Day. a 4 wheel drive, almost all terrain vehicle, perfect for a little off road photography. first order of business, shopping for rollerblades down valley and the root canal specialist 40 miles away. Ouch. But most gloriously important, an opportunity to catch a sunset up on Smuggler Mountain. Smuggler Mountain faces Ajax (Aspen) mountain which is to my left as I face west to take this picture next time I'll try to take pictures of the mining remnants, leftover from the 1800's, still visible on Smuggler dressed for the evening stead of a hike up Smuggler, with sunset time running out, I was quick enough to pack a bottle of wine in my picnic basket nothing fancy just a buttery little chardonnay from California winery La Crema
in Sonoma
setting up for a vibrant sunset
my future and the sky was big lens bright
checked the viewfinder to see the west end of Aspen behind and below me
keep an eye on the clouds gathering behind me, hinting of what was to come
dusk approached behind
Mt. Sopris visible over my right shoulder filters and fields
then a stranger stopped by
three times first looking for directions, then a glove ... then a dinner companion
I'm not available and quite wary of strangers (should be more wary of people
I know) but I give the nervous credit for trying charming effort, those first two fly bys he was mountain biking with his roommate judging by the clothes in the car and thousands of kids before them, I suspect they were staying where they could this pair say they found a room on the other side of town for $750 a month
I suspect he was looking for other opportunities as well, perhaps an
opportunity with a rich divorcee with a big house I didn't have that kind of opportunity for him but I
did have meager bounty of good wine and advice
to offer don't feed bears or blondes don't drink and drive work hard have fun be careful
I wished him and his partner luck knew he was about to have and become another Aspen story ... someone who first visited Aspen on vacation
awestruck by the view, the sky and the scent in the air
then lingered longer in Aspen than ever planned if you can ever live in Aspen, you must
